Camping de courte Vallée

By Trevor Turner

I am able-bodied and so am not qualified to give complete descriptions of facilities available to wheelchair users.

However here goes :-)

LOCATION : France, area Poitou-Charentes, 40 km north of Poitiers at Airvault.

Url: http://members.aol.com/Ccv79/Camping.htm

RECEPTION : is 20 metres from arrival parking area. Access is along a very slightly sloping hard gravel path. The entrance to reception is through a door of approx 0.8 metres in width (it may be a double door but cannot be sure as I've never needed extra width) The reception counter is approx 2 metres past entrance door and is approx. 1.2metres high with a bell to attract attention. As Wendy & Richard live immediately beyond the reception area they would easily hear a call should one not be able to reach the bell.

POOL: area is situated in a location which can easily be approached across a lawn by a wheelchair user. Chairs surround the pool area on a 2 metre hard standing. As far as I am aware there are no extra aids (hydraulic elevators etc) access is via steel step ladder.
A footbath at the entrance could be a difficulty but I am certain Richard would find a solution to enable access to the pool area.

TAKE AWAY FOOD: is provided by Wendy and is delivered to individuals at their camp emplacement.

BAR : Two or three tables are set under a vine covered pergola immediately outside reception . There is not an enclosed bar area.

SHOPS: Richard & Wendy can provide BASIC provisions including wine, bread and water. The main shopping area is in town where there are shops and a supermarket to cater for all needs. The town shopping area is situated about 1 km from the site and though the surface is all tarmac it would be a difficult journey in a wheelchair as the first 300 metres of the road back road back is virtually all uphill

LAUNDRY:  facilities exist on site in the form of a DIY coin operated washing machine and a spin dryer

BATHROOM:  facilities include a purpose built wheelchair friendly cubicle with toilet, a shower unit with a small fold-up plastic seat beneath. A single tap provides water at reasonable bathing temperature. The other facilities have standard doors and are used by both male and female.

GENERAL:  All the sites are marked and are well shaded and are spacious. The plots are all grass covered and the road is hard surfaced gravel throughout.

THE SURROUNDING AREA : is open country with a river running almost alongside the site. The town is historic with an old abbey and there are a number of chateaux within easy driving distance and the famous FUTUROSCOPE park is only about 45 minutes drive away.

Rem: this e-mail was sent to Marco Rolo ......

I have visited your site and was delighted to see the report on our site from Trevor - he has been a faithful visitor since our earliest days. All his details are accurate though the one point he was not sure of - the reception door does have a double opening to allow wheelchair access. We have had many disabled visitors on site and have adjusted things as required. The disabled shower now has a flexible hose for easier use and we also put an extra chair in the shower cubicle for people who need to sit down to undress. We are always happy to make adjustments where possible according to peoples needs - as long as they come and tell us! There is nothing more frustrating than finding out too late that there is something we could have done to make life easier.

Kind regards,

Wendy Curtis
