We use a converted Dodge Ram 350
Van, with elevator in the back, sleeping 3 adults and 1 child.
Dimensions of the beds are 135 cm X 195 cm, 80 cm X 195 cm and 80
cm X 150 cm.
I did the interior design, and it
then was built by a Belgian Company
We have a 15 l fresh water
reservoir inside the kitchen furniture and a 16 l used water
reservoir under the car. The cooking stove works on a little
camping gas reservoir ( 5 l). The fridge is from the compressor
type and works on a second battery (autonomy about 30 Hrs), charged
by the car alternator when driven or by 220V ac/dc
converter
when camping. The chemical toilet is at wheelchair level,
and disposes of the necessary grip. There is no shower or
bathroom (lack of space ). A path (width 80 cm) goes from the back
of the car to the front with a 120 cm diameter wheelchair turning
point just behind the passenger seat. Some things have 2
functions, i.e. the vertical opening of the luggage space besides
the toilet serves as grip for transfer from chair to toilet. The
cover of the kitchen serves as window cover during the night, when
one needs some privacy.....
The steering position is adapted
for me (paraplegic L1, ergo accelerator and brake are manual). The
gearbox is automatic of course. The driver seat can turn 90° for
easy access.
Everything was designed with
the wheelchair in mind, I can go on a holiday even being alone,
but with Sonja and our 2 sons, it is much more fun.
Negative points?....yes.....fuel economy.....of course!.....a 5.9L V8
engine needs lots of fuel to keep the horses running.....every
visit to a fuel station is a direct attack to our wallet.....
